» Supernatural Creatures: Angels
Angels are found in various religions, myths, and other beliefs just about as much as their counterpart, demons. The word angel derives from the Greek word ἄγγελος, or ángelo, meaning ‘messenger’.The general idea of angels are that they are divine beings that guide humans in their time of need. They are often depicted as elegantly beautiful humans with large, feathered wings upon their back, a halo, and some form of light colored robes.
In most religions such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, angels are defined as messengers of God, and the most prominent of angels are the archangels such as Michael, and Gabriel. Another commonly known angel is Lucifer—Satan or the Devil— who in Christianity and Islam is an outcasted angel for rebelling against God (in Judaism however, the ‘Satan’ is more of a metaphor for ‘challenger’, as in the difficulties and challenges man must face in his lifetime).
Angels are depicted throughout history in works of literature, art, plays, movies, music, etc. Some are depicted with ancient militia clothing as to portray they are God’s soldiers, and some with fine robes or no robes at all for innocence. It is known however that a human spirit/soul cannot become an angel after death, but some humans are referred to as ‘angels’ because of their messages from God.
